Cobalt XR-Series Carbon-Ceramic Friction Compounds

Race Engineered. Race Proven. Cobalt Friction's XR-Series Carbon-Ceramic friction composites represent a significant advancement in the evolution of motorsports brake pad technology. The XR-Series materials have unparalleled consistency and friction stability over the broadest operating temperature range in the industry (50°F to over 1600°F). Furthermore, unlike traditional resin-based compounds, Cobalt XR-Series friction composites do not require bedding/burnishing to achieve optimal performance, and exhibit consistent performance throughout the life of the pad.

XR1

combines a very aggressive initial bite/attack and high sustained torque levels with good modulation/threshold control and release characteristics to deliver unparalleled decelerations rates across a broad range of operating conditions. Cobalt Friction's proprietary Thermo-Velocity Design Profile yields unmatched consistency and torque stability across an extremely broad temperature range, throughout the life of the pad material. Unmatched disc & pad finish/wear for this level of performance. Equally well-suited for vehicles with active aerodynamic profiles as well as limited downforce applications due to the direct line pressure to generated torque relationship.

Compound Characteristics

    Temperature Range 100-1600°F (38-871°C)
    Intial Bite/Attack Very Aggressive
Torque Level & Profile Very High + Fast Ramp
    Modulation Very Good
    Release Excellent
    Consistency (across temp. range) Excellent
    Consistency (throughout pad depth) Excellent
Pad Wear & Finish Very Good (no edge crumbling or chipping)
    Pad Wear Rate-of-Change < 10.0%-ROC from New-to-End of Life
Disc Wear & Finish Excellent (no grooving or cupping)

Typical Applications*

Sports Car Grand-Am Rolex Daytona Prototype & GT, Grand-Am Koni Challenge GS & ST, SPEED World Challenge GT & Touring Car, ALMS GT2
Sports Racer IMSA Lights, SCCA ASR, CSR, DSR, etc.
Formula Car/Open Wheel Indy Lights, IndyCar, Star Mazda, etc.
Rally & Rallycross Tarmac and gravel applications
Club Racing & HPDE SCCA, NASA, BMWCCA, PCA & PBOC, etc. (GVW over 2600lbs)

*In those series and/or classes which mandate the use of a "spec" brake pad, Cobalt XR-Series materials are used for testing & validation purposes only.

XR2

features a strong initial bite with a controlled transition to a medium-high rising torque profile. Particularly well-suited to chassis/tire combinations or surface conditions which do not respond well to high initial brake energy (or where the XR1 material is too aggressive), but still require high average torque levels. By allowing the tire contact patch to extend and the chassis geometry to stabilize before imparting maximum braking torque, the driver remains in full control throughout the brake zone, from initial pedal application to the final release.

Compound Characteristics

*In those series and/or classes which mandate the use of a "spec" brake pad, Cobalt XR-Series materials are used for testing & validation purposes only.

XR3

is a highly versatile medium-high torque compound with very good cold performance and high fade resistance. Excellent modulation and wear characteristics make the XR3 the perfect choice for the majority of medium & lower inertia applications with limited brake hardware options. For higher-energy platforms utilizing XR1 or XR2 on the front axle, the XR3 is an excellent rear axle choice to maintain proper brake balance. The XR3 material is particularly well-suited for spec-Miata racing in the front axle.

Compound Characteristics

    Temperature Range 100-1200°F (38-649°C)
    Intial Bite/Attack Strong
Torque Level & Profile Medium-High + Medium Ramp
    Modulation Excellent
    Release Excellent
    Consistency (across temp. range) Excellent
    Consistency (throughout pad depth) Excellent
Pad Wear & Finish Excellent (no edge crumbling or chipping)

XR4

is a medium torque compound sharing the same application basis as the XR3, but at ~10% overall lower torque levels. Slightly rising torque profile at low to moderate line pressures, while transitioning to a virtually flat profile at higher line pressures for unmatched frictional stability in rear axle applications.

Compound Characteristics

    Temperature Range 50-1200°F (38-871°C)
    Intial Bite/Attack Solid
Torque Level & Profile Medium + Low Ramp
    Modulation Excellent
    Release Excellent
    Consistency (across temp. range) Excellent
    Consistency (throughout pad depth) Excellent
Pad Wear & Finish Excellent (no edge crumbling or chipping)
    Pad Wear Rate-of-Change < 5.0%-ROC from New-to-End of Life
Disc Wear & Finish Excellent (no grooving or cupping)

XR5

is a highly specialized low-medium torque compound designed for rear-axle applications in vehicles exhibiting rapid and high levels of weight transfer under braking (e.g. front wheel drive touring cars). Solid initial bite and a flat torque profile which transitions to a slightly negative slope during the last 60-75% of a brake zone eliminates rear lock-up.

CSR

The new Cobalt Club Sport R compound sets new levels of performance for the competitive autocross and/or HPDE participant. As compared to competing products (as well as our own previous-generation GT-Sport) the Cobalt CSR compound provides a stronger initial bite, higher average torque and improved disc/pad wear. While the Cobalt CSR can be driven on the street to and from events, it is not designed as a replacement for OEM street pads.
